Cats actually can see color, but only close up. They can hear a half-octave higher than dogs. But they have a faulty sweet receptor, sweet does nothing for them. Cats can make a 100 different sounds, as compared to 10 for dogs.
The article also confirmed what I've seen in several cats. I saw our cat and an old housemate's cat making what sounded like bird noises while looking at birds through a window. The article suggested it may be a form of mimickry, and that a cat making these sounds also moves its mouth in a "crushing your spine" movement.
