Childfree Community
Jan. 11th, 2004 11:19 amI've been looking at the friends list of one of the people I currently have on my friends list, since I don't have too much to currently read.
One of the communities she belongs to is the childless community. I considered joining this community but I've been really turned off by some of the posts.
I think its interesting that some of the folks on there seem to go out of their way to avoid children. Granted, we see some of the worst children in public places, but children are in many ways just like any adult. They are all unique, some are complete assholes and will be when they are adults. Some just have poor role models and will develop into decent people away from those models. Most importantly, some kids are really cool people who are fun to interact with, and I think these folks who seem to fear and loathe kids are shortchanging themselves.
I wonder if its just a misplaced misanthropy, I haven't seen one trait in kids I haven't seen repeated in adults: temper tantrums, whining, hitting people when they're mad, pouting, running around and acting crazy.
I also wonder if maybe some of them felt robbed of their own childhoods. Maybe its too painful to be compassionate to children when you didn't receive any nurturing as a child.
