New subject

I've finished Asimov's Guide to the Bible, volume 2. Since volume 1 is missing, I'm looking for recommendations for a text on Rome. I want a writer who can breath life into his/her writing, not a dry list of historical details.

I know I have a fabulous list of friends, some of whom know exactly the right book. Suggestions?
