Hard labor

I was writing a friend and the term hard labor came up.

Hard labor reminds me of all the digging I did for my father.  We lived in an area that was all clay, though not pottery level clay.  We had to dig a lot of ditches to sucessfully drain the yard,  It was flat as a pancake, and whenever we had a hard rain our yard would become a lake.

When the clay was wet it was sticky and goopy.  When it was dry it was like digging through soft rock.  Not much grew well in that stuff.  Beans and Potatoes did ok.

I appreciate the sandy soil I currently have in my yard, not hard to dig in at all.
