Social phobias

One of my LJ friends as well as a personal aquaintance has been going through what I would describe as a social phobia. I empathize with him. I've also been consistently avoiding social situations in the past few months.
Our past relationships set patterns in our lives. I was fortunate enough to have a few good friendships, though the first guy I felt I could trust was Rob, my first rommmate at WMU. Before that time I had good friends, but they weren't people I could trust to be there in a pinch or keep personal info private. I did have some friends in high school who made life more interesting, though, and Chris, high school buddy, taught me women weren't aliens and could be a lot of fun.
I was a real nerd in high school. I tried to fit into the smart people crowd at one point. I'd like to "thank" John B., may he rot in whatever hell he's created for himself. His machinations had me ostracized from that group just when I was beginning to establish some interesting friendships. So I hung out with burnouts, John, you fundamentalist fuck. I'm not bitter or anything, though. ;)
John was right, I hung out with burnouts. Those folks were not as judgemental, accepted me just the way I was. I didn't mind inhaling their second-hand smoke, they didn't mind me talking about egg-headed stuff. We liked the same music too.
My parents didn't have many personal friends. My mother had a small circle of women she saw once in a blue moon. I think she's still in touch with a few of them. My father has 2 brothers and 9 sisters, he mostly hung out with them.
