I don't buy any of the stupid reasons people try to give me for being late.   Pagan standard time is the one that I have been told personally, though I've also heard Black standard time, Southern Standard Time, Hispanic/Mexican Standard Time, etc.   As well as being racist/classist, these are just B.S. excuses for rudeness.

Just stop it.  I don't want to hear your B.S.  If you don't have enough respect for your doctor, therapist, judge, or (insert other reason for an appointment)to be on time then I guess you don't get to see them, do you?

I'm one of those chronically late people. Usually not hugely late..but 5-15 is not uncommon. It's not, for me at least, any sign of lack of respect for the person I'm going to see. Its not intentional rudeness. Seriously. It doesn't seem to matter how much I want to do the thing, how much I'm looking forward to it, how much I adore the person..it still happens. The fear of it, and the resulting frustration of friends, causes a lot of anxiety..worrying about the potential for being late..the whole way there. Seems like it would be simple to avoid that stress by leaving earlier, yet that never seems to be what happens.

Being somewhere on time requires being able to estimate how long it's going to take to do the things you need to do to get ready and drive there. I always, always underestimate it, or have a real optimistic view of it... Or, I'll get so involved in whatever I was doing before hand I'll totally loose track of the time passing. So, I'll end up starting too late getting ready, then I can't find my essential thing I have to have to go, or forgot I needed gas etc.

I also seem to have a real knack for finding time warps on the way. If there is a back up or construction I seem to find it. I used to work down at the tech center, and my boss and I would exit the building at exactly the same time to go to our cars and drive to another building for a meeting on the other side of the campus. Somehow I'd always end up 5 or 10 minutes later than him. I'm not sure why. I never seemed to think I dawdled..but it happened over and over.

Not that makes it any less frustrating on the other end but..

I've been playing the "almost late" game at work. I need to bite the bullet and move the clock back another 10 min. Miss those jobs where timekeeping was on the honor system.

And 5 to 10 minutes isn't that late, either. I have people who show up 40 min late to an appointment and think we are going to rearrange our schedule to accommodate them. Uh, no.
