Limited imagination

I was laughing at an old Heinlein story during lunch. The astronauts smoke. I think it shows a limited imagination by the scifi authors that have smoking spacemen.
Smoking was very common in the 50's. Laws have made smokers pariahs in public places in many states today. The majority of white males smoked in the 1950's. Today only about 25 percentage of the U.S. population smokes. Several of my co-workers told me their children have told smoking adults they are polluting their air.
Plus, if you have a limited resource like oxygen, which also happens to be highly flammable, the last thing you want is a burning cigarette in your space capsule. Similar to the idea of having a loaded gun in space, who would be crazy enough to discharge a gun when it will likely open a hole into space?
