In 356 B.C. a temple in Lydia, dedicated to a local goddess, Artemis of the Ephesians, was burnt to the ground. The person who did it was quickly captured and asked what possible motive he had for such a senseless act.

His response was he wanted to make his name immortal. The leaders of the time ordered his name be expunged from all records and his name never be uttered again.

However, his name has been passed down anyway. Herostratus, temple burning bastard. Guess fifteen minutes wasn't enough for him.

Tuesday night in class I was wondering just what Plato would have thought of the fact that we were discussing his ideas, trying to figure out what he meant, praising and lambasting him--all about 2500 years after he died.
